The IEU’s retiring but not shy types
IEU staff often receive messages that remind us why the union matters so much to members. We thought we should share two recent examples.
The first comes from Richard Mucha, a member since 1990, who has been retired for eight years.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the IEU for the great work it does advocating for and supporting teachers, principals and support staff in order to better their pay and conditions, providing PD and forums for educators to come together in order to further their professional skills, and for the ethical role the union plays in the greater community via informing and encouraging its members to strive for a more just society and world.”
The second member joined the union – or more accurately, a precursor organisation to the IEU Victoria Tasmania – in February 1988.
“Thank you for your support and hard work over many years. I always felt you had our backs. I am sure you will continue to work for the best outcomes for independent teachers. Your encouragement, interesting articles, professional development opportunities and general support are most appreciated. Keep up the amazing work.”
IEU Victoria Tasmania Retired Member Network
Ongoing membership in the IEU supports unionism, education and the rights of workers in the industry you loved. If you want to continue your support in retirement, please contact the IEU office on 9254 1860 or thepoint@ieuvictas.org.au or contact your current Organiser.
You may not have known it, but you can remain an IEU member post-retirement for just $28.20 a year! That’s just 50 cents per week to remain, as retired worker and active unionist Maxine Barry put it last year: “keenly interested” in education, union and political matters.
Read about Maxine’s ongoing unionism in retirement here.
Maxine Berry is also active in the ACTU’s Retired Unionist Network, a national network of retired union members who want to stay informed and active in the movement run by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU).
